Cynthia Winter is a poet and visual artist who finds the world most itself in its small, specific encounters. Two elderly sisters pause on an avenue; two deer approach and don't startle or run. A Baltimore oriole settles in a Provincetown backyard. A squid, rescued from the shallows, shimmers red and orange as it swims toward depth. These are the moments that find their way into her poems and her drawings: the natural world and the human one, briefly sharing the same frame. She has been finding them, and recording them, for most of her life.

Bittersweet: The Certainty of Change
Cynthia Winter's debut collection: eighty-eight pages of poems and original art, written from a lifetime of close observation. Moving through five sections (Portraits, Impressions, Seasons, Snapshots, and Spirit), she finds meaning in what passes quickly: milkweed pods that don't break open, they burst; an old man who carries his blind dog into the bay each evening to remind him of his youth; a dying woman whose silence finally breaks, pulling the room in with her. Original drawings and photographs by the author accompany the poems throughout.
The kind of book that makes the ordinary world feel more worth inhabiting.

Each Drawing a Meditation on a Single Thing
Cynthia Winter came to making art in her late sixties, but the eye had been trained for decades. Her years studying art history had taught her to look at a work until she understood why it succeeded; that discipline carried directly into her own practice. She works in pen and ink, watercolor, graphite, and pastel, returning to the same subjects with the same devotion she brings to her poems: ravens, sunflowers, mushrooms, each one studied until it gives something up. Drawing, she has said, is a form of meditation. It shows in the work.

Deep cobalt blue fills almost the entire circular field, broken only by a many-armed, radiating form in orange, pink, and red that spreads out from a pale blue, eye-like center. Fine golden tendrils trail from the lower edge of the composition, drifting like cilia in water. A pale crescent rests at the top of the circle like a flash of surface light. The scale of the thing is impossible to pin down: it could be the view through a microscope or a glimpse of something enormous and distant. One of the most visually striking pieces in the collection, and one that rewards a slow look.

Tithonia in full color: red-orange petals layered in colored pencil over watercolor and ink, set against a soft, hazy blue-green ground. Three blooms appear at different stages, one fully open and facing forward, one turned in profile, one still closed in bud, with a scatter of blue-green leaves rendered with the same patience as the flowers themselves. The palette is warmer and more saturated than the plant in life, which gives the piece its particular charge: a garden remembered in heightened color.

Six mushrooms cluster together on a fallen log, caps in shades of magenta, plum, and rose, each dusted with small white spots. They're shown from multiple angles at once: some caps tip forward to reveal their gilled undersides in fine striped detail, others are seen from above, domed and solid. Pale curved stems lean into one another at the base, rooted in moss and fern that anchor the piece in a specific, grounded place. Warm and slightly fantastical, it brings the quiet strangeness of a forest floor indoors.

The raven's head tilts back, beak open mid-call, the eye lit a single deep red against otherwise total black and white. Built almost entirely from fine, dense pen strokes, the feathers carry weight and direction rather than flat shading; every line follows the curve of the bird's neck and shoulder. The effect is immediate and physical, a sound caught mid-air. A striking, graphic piece for a wall that wants presence.
